Railroad apartments, named because their rooms line up in sequence like train cars, were the dominant housing type in Brooklyn late 19th century tenement construction. They maximized unit count per building by eliminating hallways entirely, using each room as the circulation path to the next. While some renters find them charming, the layout completely eliminates privacy: reaching the bedroom requires walking through the living room and kitchen, and reaching the bathroom requires passing through the bedroom.
