Raleigh one-bedroom apartments in narrow shotgun-plan buildings have windows only at the front facade and rear wall, with no openings on the long side walls. Air movement through the unit requires alignment of the front and back openings, but the middle rooms, typically the kitchen or living area, sit between these two openings with no independent ventilation. In warm months, these middle rooms can remain stagnant and hot even when front and rear windows are open.
